With a population of just under one million, Nova Scotia is one of Canada's Maritime provinces located on the Atlantic Ocean. In 2015, Nova Scotia's nine district health authorities were merged into the new, province-wide Nova Scotia Health Authority. Nova Scotia is the location of Atlantic Canada's largest teaching hospital and a major referral option for tertiary acute care services for the provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. Nova Scotia has fourteen ICUs located in twelve hospitals throughout the province.
