Continuing Learning Hours Guidelines

CACCN uses the guidelines established by the Canadian Nurses Association for applying Continuing Learning Hours.  Continuing Learning Hours are available for educational events via CACCN.  

Chapters may provide continuing learning hours certificates for educational events provided the hours are withing the guidelines provided by CNA.  Chapters may not deviate from the CNA CL Guidelines to provide additional CL hours.


  • Each    CL    activity    must    relate    to   critical care    nursing    specialty and / or area of nursing practice and to at least one of the competencies for that specialty and/or area of nursing practice. 
  • Each    CL    activity    must    be    a    minimum    of    30    minutes.
  • One    clock    hour    equals    one    CL    hour.    Subtract    any    time    taken    from    the    CL    activity    for    lunch,  breaks, etc.
  • Maximum CL hours allowable per day = 6 hours 
  • Guidelines:
    • 30 minute insession = 0.5 continuing learning hours
    • 1 hour education session = 1 continuing learning hour
    • 4 hour education session less break 30 mins = 3.5 continuing learning hours
    • 8 hour education day less lunch/breaks = 6 continuing learning hours
